Annual Honors Gala: CAWI HONORS
This past Sunday, March 22nd, the Silver Spring Civic Building was transformed into an epicenter of inspiration and culture during the 2nd Annual Caribbean and African Women of Impact (CAWI) Honors Gala. Under the theme “Bloom & Flourish,” the event did more than celebrate individual achievements; it reaffirmed the collective power of women across the diaspora in a gathering that will remain etched in the community’s memory.
Impeccable Organization: The Marea Touch
The execution of the event stood out for its sophistication and warmth, thanks to the impeccable organization led by Marea (SEA The Difference). Their vision successfully elevated this second edition to a higher level, meticulously attending to every detail—from the VIP welcome hour to the gala banquet. The atmosphere reflected an intentional curation that allowed attendees to connect with their roots while honoring the present.
Recognitions That Transcend
The awards ceremony was the heart of the afternoon. In an emotional tribute titled “Giving Flowers, Honoring Legacies,” the gala recognized the trajectories of prominent figures who have broken barriers across various disciplines:
- Arts & Entertainment: Homage was paid to Emmy-nominated actress Janelle James and Oscar nominee Gabourey Sidibe, whose careers have opened doors for Afro-descendant representation in Hollywood.
- Leadership & Humanity: The gala highlighted the work of Dr. Berthrude Albert, a public health leader and activist, alongside Olympic medalist Thea LaFond and human rights activist Waris Dirie.
- Posthumous Tributes: In a deeply moving moment, the event honored the memory of women who left an indelible mark, such as Sharon Chuter, Alsion Roach Wilson, and Miya Marcano, reaffirming that their legacy lives on through community work.
Authorities and Institutional Support
The event featured a distinguished presence that underscored the political and social importance of the gala. Among the authorities and high-profile figures in attendance, the support of local and regional representatives was prominent, as well as delegations from the tourism authorities of Antigua and Barbuda and Grenada, reinforcing the ties between the diaspora in the United States and their home nations.
A Closing Filled with Hope
More than just an awards ceremony, the gala was a “cultural intervention.” Amidst the flavors of Caribbean cuisine and world-class artistic performances, the 2nd CAWI Gala proved that recognizing talent in one’s lifetime is one of the most powerful tools for building the future.
As the organization noted, the impact of these women is measured not only by their titles but by their resilience and their ability to nurture their communities even as they themselves flourish.
